Abstract

This research aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a thread-cutting lathe tool sharpening skill training package in industrial mechanics, integrated with Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The research also sought to compare the learning achievement of students who learned using this training package with a pre-defined criterion. The sample group consisted of 30 students selected through cluster random sampling. Four research instruments were used: 1) a problem record form, problem-solving guidelines, and teaching management plan for the Cutting Tool Sharpening subject; 2) the developed training package itself; 3) a suitability assessment form with a content validity between 0.60 and 1.00; and 4) a skill assessment form with a content validity between 0.60 and 1.00 and an inter-rater reliability of 0.70. Data analysis involved content analysis, calculation of mean and standard deviation, and a t-test. The research revealed that students lacked thread-cutting lathe tool sharpening skills and knowledge of the correct procedures and processes. Existing teaching materials only covered basic cutting tool sharpening principles, resulting in student performance below the set criterion. To address these issues, the researcher implemented PBL in conjunction with the developed training package. This approach allowed students to practice critical thinking and problem-solving within realistic contexts. The overall suitability of the training package was rated as the highest level (Mean = 4.75, SD = 0.09). Furthermore, the effectiveness of the training package exceeded the 80/80 criterion. A comparison of student practical skills after using the training package showed a statistically significant improvement above 80% at the 0.05 level.
